As the first action of Women in Equality for Lasting Peace Initiative – Ukrainian and Sudanese sisterhood for Peace – We would like to remind all women and men globally, that millions of people in Ukraine and Sudan are caught up in conflict, anguishing massively in wars with no end in sight. Our civilians are suffering from an aggressor’s brutal actions. Women, children, and men are killed and injured, forced from their homes, dispossessed and destitute. Even humanitarian facilities, including hospitals and aid convoys are targeted.
The Beijing Platform (1985), the UNCSR 1325 (2000) gave us hope then, but today, after years of struggle and effort, we see that the global security system is unable to restore and build lasting peace, to ensure justice for victims and security for nations .
Not only women of Ukraine and Sudan, but women’s groups around the world, we have done a lot to get these important global documents adopted, but unfortunately our involvement in peace processes is still clearly insufficient today.
All we strive for, as women living in armed conflict every day, is to initiate a mediation process to restore dignity and hope, progress, and prosperity. We call for international solidarity and compassion, dialogue and engagement across political divides, to combine our efforts to strengthen the international security system, bring aggressors to account and to ensure wars are no longer an instrument for solutions. We call for your support as women are crucial for negotiations and decision making.
Our frustration with the effectiveness of global tools for peace calls us to look for other ways, other partnerships, other actions. Upholding and promoting women’s participation is not only a matter of fundamental human rights but also a strategic imperative for achieving lasting peace and security. Peace depends also on women as peacebuilders, as peacekeepers, as mediators must be:
